been reading

I've been reliving my young girlhood lately through young adult fiction.

I find it much better than the depressing, political, voilent or immoral stuff written for adults. If I'm going to read I want to be uplifted or transported somewhere beautiful and full of hope and promise. Not instructed on the ugliness and immorality of the world.

Ok, enough soapbox. On to what I've been reading...

First I read Ella Enchanted. I have not seen the movie. Is it good? The book was very fun. I like Cinderella stories. I like any book that takes a traditional story and fills me in on the details that might have been left out of the original telling.

[Speaking of Cinderella stories, I liked this one better than Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, although that good too. This one still has magic.]

And now I'm reading Anne of Green Gables. I am a HUGE Anne of Green Gables fan. I have been ever since it was first aired on PBS when I was Anne's age. I defy any woman to tell me they don't love Anne of Green Gables. How can you not love all the innocent, beautiful, romanticism in this book? And how can you not love, Gilbert?! Tell me that!

The only thing I've found that Anne and I disagree on is the fact that she doesn't think there is any "scope for imagination in patchwork." I'm afraid that might be a sign of immaturity. :)

But um, here's my confesssion. Although I've been a long time fan of Anne of Green Gables, can quote her, compared my beaus to Gilbert, and just generally wished I was more Anne-like, this is my first time reading the books!

So there hasn't been much sewing going on around here lately. I'm too busy remembering all my young girl dreams and fantasies as I dive into young adult fiction.

We really are kindred spirits. I LOVE Anne of Green Gables. It's been my favorite since I got chickenpox in 3rd grade and my mom read them to me while I was sick. I need to read some of the later ones when she is married and has kids. I haven't read those as many times as the first few. This is really making me want to read them all again.

I was just at the library yesterday, Ethan was checking out a Star Wars book, as he was deciding which one he wanted, I was perusing the books in that section of the library. More older children than young adult actually. Anyway, I found several that I want to read. I was thinking the same thing that you just said, I am tired of all of the garbage, that they think just because you are an adult, that's what you want filling your mind. Just reminds me, "If anything is praiseworthy or of good report, we seek after these things". The whole world needs to adopt that philosophy. IMHO Thanks for sharing this. BTW, I have never read Anne, I need to add that to my list. :~)

Great choices!!! I love Anne of Green Gables myself...I got the PBS series on DVD's for Christmas a couple of years ago and have watched them many, many times. Pretty sure I have a crush on Gilbert. =) I would recommend the movie for Ella Enchanted...I think it's cute. I'll have to give the book a try!

Hi Erica-
I just found your blog through Nannette at Fridas Hive.
I agree about the young adult reading. I read them all the time- I like the fact of no worries, along with you.
I'm also a HUGE Anne fan- Years ago,I reproduced the quilt that's on her bed in the PBS series.
I don't get any designing or quilting in if I pick up a book so a while back I started listening to books on CD while I work. I love it! I can meet my deadlines and still get my "reading" in!
The quilts you have done this year are beautiful!

I adore Anne of Green Gables as well. It will always be my favorite, hands down! Some times our minds need a little bit of that throw back stuff to gain perspective again :)

I too love Anne! I would watch the movies over and over. As an adult I ordered the VHS only available in Canada so I could see how her story ended...

I have seen the Ella movie, it's cute in that young comedy sort of way. I liked it!
