Quilt Display

I've got this big blank wall in my family room. I've purposefully kept it blank because I want to put a big quilt up on it.

For about the past year I've been trying to think what sort of quilt I wanted to make for this room. We spend a ton of time in here- its our tv room, playroom, reading room, computer room and basic multipurpose room. I want something colorful, fun, and lively. The quilt isn't supposed to be the focal point in the room but it will add a lot to the decor.

Its a year later and I still haven't produced the perfect quilt for this room.

And then I had a brainstorm! I don't know why I didn't think of this before. While I continue to muse over the 'perfect quilt' possibilities I need to get a quilt rack of some sort and display my other quilts. And then once I produce the 'perfect quilt' for this room I'll have the means to display it already.

So my question is... what is the best way to display quilts on a wall? A curtain rod of some sort? Those fancy new quilt holders that somehow pinch the top of your quilt all the way across and hold it in place?

Please comment and let me know what methods you've tried and what works best.

I've tried several but for me the best thing is a curtain rod with those clips on it to just clip the quilt. That way you can change it easily and there is no need for the "perfect" quilt. The quilt changes with seasons and decor! I have a rod hung in my sewing room and the entry way and the quilts change so much that I love it - so easy.

I don't have an idea for displaying your quilts, but I think it is a great idea to rotate them for the seasons, etc. Good luck!

i have an antique quilt that i've had hanging for years. i wouldn't use clips...they will eventually damage the quilt if you hang it for any length of time. for my quilt i made a muslin sleeve that runs the length of the quilt. there is a specific way to sew this so that it supports the weight of the quilt without damaging it..i've seen the instructions online...i'm sure you could find it. then i used a curtain rod through the sleeve. works like a dream and it's easy to take down if you need to. hope this helps.

I have the curtain rod with the clips like Nanette. I am not to worried about damaging the quilts with the clips, as I change them often.

Hello, The quilt shop where I live in Chico CA (Honey Run Quilters)has recently had a new owner that has made it beautiful inside. Ok, my point is that she used curtain rods hung from the ceiling and then the clips. It is beautiful and really makes the place look wonderful. I think in the ceiling is a great way to hang them, then you have all of the wall space. good luck!

i use nanette's trick and love it...joann's has some great curtain rods and clip on curtain rings and they're not too expensive!

And... you can probably find a good 40% off coupon for Joann's.

Hi Erica! I guess it depends on the look you're going for...do you want to display only the quilt or some other things too? If it's just the quilt, then I'd go with the curtain rod and a sleeve on the back of the quilt so the clips don't damage anything. If you want to display other things with your quilt, then I'd do one of the those rods with the shelves attached...do you know what I'm thinking of? Then you can change out the quilt and the decor to match the seasons...maybe more of a focal point. Anyway, whatever method you choose it's going to look great! Sorry for the novel comment! =)

$5 curtain rod at BBB, muslin sleeve, be done. The only thing that holds you back is quickly whip stitching the sleeve on the back. Show us what you've been working on lately!!!

I have quilts hanging all over. I'm least fond of the curtain rod (I have a sleeve sewn on the back of the quilt) because it hang too far away from the wall and it causes the quilt to "wave". My husband has built the other hangers and the quilts lay on the wall nicely.

If you want to try keeping something more permanently on the wall, bolt it to a large wooden frame. I made especially wide sashes and then used that to staple it to the wood. It sounds horrid to staple something so beautiful, but it keeps it from stretching. You can look on my blog (older posts, and my flickr) to see some examples if you want (www.prettywithribbons). Best wishes - a quilt will look great there.
